Roulette betting outside bets | Roulette is an exciting game that offers players a wide selection of bets available at every round of play. Roulette bets fall into two main categories; ‘inside bets’ and ‘outside bets’. In most casinos players are allowed to make a single bet on roulette or make several inside bets, several outside bets or mix both inside and outside bets during the same round of play.
What are Outside Bets
Roulette outside bets offer reasonable payouts for bets that carry a high probability of winning. They are the exact opposite of roulette inside bets that offer very high payouts for bets that carry a low probability of winning.
Outside bets are made on large groups of numbers and they are very well suited for level headed players who enjoy moderate risk-taking that offers the potential for a good return on their gambling investment.
Red or Black Bet
When you come near a roulette table you will see on the layout two adjacent box areas. In one box there will be a clear drawing of a red rectangle and on the other box, there will be a drawing of a black rectangle. Sometimes the words “red” and “black” will also be written down but on most roulette table layouts you will see just the colors.
The 36 numbers used in roulette are divided into 18 numbers that have a red background and 18 numbers that have a black background. Placing a bet on either red or black means that you predict that the roulette ball will land on a number that have the background color you wagered on.
Red or Black bets offer even money and pay 1-to-1 to winners. So you will get your bet back plus a payout that is equal to your bet size. Remember that 0 and 00 have a green background so they do not count as either red or black. Any bets made on them are lost when the ball lands on 0 or 00, with the exception of the “En Prison” rule in some European and French roulette games.
The even bet is located to the left of the red bet box and the odd bet is located to the right of the black bet box. Even or Odd bets are even money bets and pay 1-to-1 to winners.
It is important to remember that 0 and 00 are not considered even or odd so if the ball lands on 0 all Even and Odd bets are lost. There is one exception to this rule which is available in some European and French roulette games.
The exception is the “En Prison” rule that allows players who made an even-money bet (red/black, even/odd and high/low) to imprison their bet for the next round when the ball lands on 0. This way the player does not lose their bet and gets to play another round with the bet they made the previous round.
Low or High Bet
The numbers used when playing roulette are divided into a group of low numbers (1-18) and high numbers (19-36). The low bet box is to the left of the even bet box and the high bet box is to the right of the odd bet box. The bet boxes are marked ‘1 to 18’ and ’19 to 36’.
These bets offer an even money payout of 1-to-1. 0 and 00 do not fall under the low or high bets so if the ball lands on 0 or 00 you will lose your low or high bet unless you are playing French or European roulette that allow the “En Prison” rule.
The 36 numbers on the roulette wheel are divided into three groups of a dozen numbers each. On the roulette table layout, there are three boxes, located in the middle of the table layout between the numbered boxes and the even-money bets.
The first box covers a bet on the first 12 numbers (1-12) and is marked on the table as “1st 12”. The second box covers a bet on the second 12 numbers (13-24) and is marked on the table as “2nd 12”. The third box covers a bet on the third 12 numbers (25-36) and is marked on the table as “3rd 12”.
Dozen bets are not even-money bets. They offer a better payout of 2-to-1. The “En Prison” rule is not valid for the dozen bet as this bet is not an even-money bet.
The 36 numbers on the roulette wheel are divided into three columns. Each column consists of 12 numbers. Each column bet has its own bet box at the bottom of the roulette table layout. All three column bet boxes are marked with the offered payout for the column bet of 2-to-1.
Each row on the table layout has three consecutive numbers on it (1-2-3 on the first row, 4-5-6 on the second, 7-8-9 on the third and so on). This way each number in a column is three numbers higher or lower than the number below or above it (so the first column is 1-4-7-10….)
This is a special dozen bet made on the numbers: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32 and 34. This bet offers a payout of 2-to-1 the same as all other dozen bets. The snake bet is made by placing your chips on the low corner of the number 34 that is adjacent to the 19-36 bet (High even-money bet).
The Benefits of Outside Bets
Making outside bets is a great way of maintaining and conserving your bankroll which will allow you longer sessions of roulette playing.
Your chances of winning outside bets are much greater than your chances of winning inside bets and while they are recommended for new players, they are also the main bets that professional roulette players stick to.
The Pitfalls of Outside Bets
Anyone looking for a thrill that is fueled by fast action and high-risk taking might find outside bets a bit too conservative for their liking and would prefer to make inside bets that offer bigger payouts for bigger risks taken.
